As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me is a 2001 drama written by Bastian Clev'' and directed by Hardy Martins. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Josef Martin Bauer. It is also based on a true story. As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me tells the story of Clemens Forell (Bernhard Bettermann), a German soldier imprisoned in a Soviet prisoner-of-war camp in Siberia after World War Two. After four horrific years of working in the mines he decides that he must take dramatic action to survive. The film follows Forell's' dramatic escape and three year, 8,000 mile journey across postwar Russia to freedom. Driven by the desire to survive and to see his family again, Forell endures almost unimaginable hardship and danger. All the while he is mercilessly hunted by the obsessive Oberleutnant Kamenev (Anatoliy Kotenyov), a man bent on capturing Forell and returning him to the gulag.
