As You Like It is a romantic comedic film directed by Paul Czinner based on William Shakespeare's play of the same name that centers on the exile and the subsequent schemes devised by a young Rosalind (Elisabeth Bergner) as she tries to find the extent to which her beloved truly loves her. The daughter of a banished Duke Senior (Henry Ainley), Rosalind had remained in court, raised by her uncle and presiding Duke Frederick (Felix Aylmer) with his daughter Celia (Sophie Stewart) as her closest companion. But when Rosalind comes into contact with Orlando (Laurence Olivier), the youngest son of Sir Roland de Bois, her uncle banishes her. As Rosalind and Celia, who have disguised themselves as male pages Ganymede and Aliena, along with their jester Touchstone (Mackenzie Ward) venture into the Forest of Arden, where they come across Duke Senior, they find themselves in a strange love debacle as Orlando bids to find Rosalind, Rosalind as Ganymede tries to teach Orlando how to overcome love, a shepherdess falls in love with Ganymede, while a shepherd pines for the shepherdess. As You Like It is a comedic look at disguised identities and pining love affairs that was the first ever portrayal of a Shakespearean character by Laurence Olivier.
