Ashtanga, NY was going to be a concert film celebrating the style of yoga known as Ashtanga which is now extremely popular in the United States and across the world. It shows the aging yoga guru names Sri K. Pattabhi Jois who was giving his final North American workshop in New York City in September 2001...Devotees of his yoga style flew from all over the world to participate in practicing with the eighty six year old guru. Right in the midst of this workshop the terrorist attacks that took down the world trade center happened. This horrible event radically changed the purpose and meaning of this yoga gathering. In the scary and difficult weeks that followed the attacks Jois used his Ashtanga practices to try to heal and help his diverse followers. This is not an instructional video. Rather it is a documentary which looks into the intersection of ancient practices and modern life, all within the extremely resilient New York City.moreless
