At Close Range is an American documentary that tells the story of Joel Sartore, a photographer who balances raising a family of three children while traveling around the world as a nature photographer for National Geographic. At Close Range shows the two very different lives of Sartore. In one life, he is chased by wolves, bears, alligators and snakes as he tries to capture the perfect picture of these magnificent beasts in the wild. Often he spends weeks living in deplorable conditions trying to capture the perfect picture. In the other life, he is at home with his wife and children openly wondering whether he has the best job in the world or the worst. At Close Range also introduces the audience to the editors of National Geographic who must sort through tens of thousands of photographs to find the ten to twenty that ultimately are published in the magazine.
