Attack! is a 1956 war film which centers around an American National Guard infantry as they strategically set up observation posts during the last phases of World War II. The film is based on a book by Norman Brooks called Fragile Fox. Venerated American filmmaker Robert Aldrich (The Dirty Dozen, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, The Flight of the Phoenix) directs. Captain Cooney (Eddie Albert), a cowardly man, struggles to effectively lead a unit of men as they face the front lines of war. Lt. Costa (Jack Palance), one of the infantry men, recognizes his boss's inability to perform and fears where he might lead them. Just when Costa thought their position couldn't become any more threatening, Cooney leads them into a ring of fire. As the lines between life and death begin to obscure, Costa entertains the idea of doing away with Cooney in an effort to save everyone's life. Attack! is a great war film internationally applauded throughout the decades - the acting and directing alone is worth the watch!
