August is a 1996 comedy/drama directed by Anthony Hopkins and is based on Anton Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya". The movie is set in an August in the 1890's on a peaceful country estate in North Wales. Ieuan Davies (Anthony Hopkins) lives there with his niece Sian (Rhian Morgan) and his mother, Mair Davies (Rhoda Lewis). He manages the estate for next to nothing and finds his life rather boring until the absentee owner, Professor Alexander Blathwaite (Leslie Phillips), and his American-born second wife, Helen (Kate Burton), arrive for a visit. Sian is Alexander's daughter from his first marriage and Ieuan is his first wife's brother, but that doesn't keep Alexander from trying to impose his London ways and attitudes on them. Ieuan has loved Helen from afar for some time now and Sian feels the same way about Dr. Michael Lloyd (Gawn Grainger), a local conservationist. Over the course of a single weekend, these secret loves will change all their lives forever.moreless
