August provides a look at the tumultuous world of dot.com start-up companies following the stock market downturn in the month leading up to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Tom Sterling (Josh Hartnett) and his brother, Joshua (Adam Scott) launched the Internet site Landshark with much success, but while Tom lives the life of the rich and infamous, the company's stock value is plummeting. Joshua provides the creative design for the site and Tom is the promoter, but Tom thinks the two are being held back by their investor, Cyrus Ogilvie (David Bowie). Tom has spent his new-found wealth on a '67 Camaro and hangs out at trendy clubs, keeping up the appearance of success only five months after the company's launch. The meteoric rise of the company and sudden wealth strained Tom and Joshua's relationship, and Tom's girlfriend, Sarrah (Naomie Harris), has decided to call it quits. As the company falls apart, Tom reaches out to heal those wounds and reconcile with his father David (Rip Torn). Austin Chick directed the 2008 film written by Howard A. Rodman.moreless
