Jay Roach
Released:
1997
Rating:
PG-13

International spy - Austin Powers, cryogenically freezes himself and leaves his favourite decade (where he is a god) behind to await the return of his arch nemesis, the diabolical criminal mastermind Dr. Evil, who has frozen himself and retreated to the depth of space. 30 years later, Dr. Evil returns to earth to finish what he started (hold the entire world ransom) and Austin is unfrozen, for he is the only one that can stop Dr. Evil. With the help of sexy agent Vanessa Kensington, Austin must adjust to the changing times of the 90's, fight off Dr. Evil's many assassins, and go deep undercover in Dr. Evil's secret underground layer.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Variety

Definitely lives up to its promise of being smashing, groovy, baby.

  • 60

    The New York Times

As goofy and throwaway as the "Brady Bunch" movies, but it has the same winking appreciation of vintage kitsch.

  • 20

    Los Angeles Times

The result is a comedy of errors. Errors, yes. Comedy . . . we're not so sure.
