Autumn Sonata is a 1978 family drama from noted Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. Acclaimed concert pianist Charlotte (Ingrid Bergman in her final film performance) accepts an invitation from her daughter, Eva (Liv Ullmann), after the death of Charlotte's long-time partner, Leonardo (Georg L''kkeberg). The women have not seen each other in seven years, as Charlotte's career takes her around the world. Charlotte is surprised to see Helena (Lena Nyman), her mentally disabled daughter living with Eva. Tensions begin to develop between mother and daughter, as Eva blames her mother for her unhappy life and troubled marriage to Viktor (Halvar Bj''rk). At the same time, Charlotte resents Eva's keeping Helena's presence a secret. Eva has found solace in taking care of her sister, as she remains in mourning for a young son that accidentally drowned. The unspoken tensions begin to surface as Charlotte tries to explain her life choices to her critical daughter.
