Azumi is an action thriller film directed by Ryuhei Kitamura based on the Japanese manga of the same name by Yu Koyama that centers on Azumi (Aya Ueto), a young orphaned girl raised and trained by a band of assassins, led by Gessai (Yoshio Harada) to become ruthless and deadly killers. While they have been brought up solely with the skills of a samurai and ninja, Gessai consistently taunts Azumi and her nine other assassins-in-training about their mission: to kill the three warlord allies, Nagamasa Asano (Masato Ibu), Kiyomasa Kato (Naoto Takenaka), and Masayuki Sanada (Mikijiro Hira). After Gessai has the ten turn on each to lessen the ranks, the surviving five set out on the first leg of the mission in order to kill Asano. Asano goes down easy but it is the road to Kato that the surviving Hyuga (Kenji Kohashi), Naraga (Yuma Ishigaki), and Azumi are faced with the most difficulty as they are exposed to a theater-troupe offering them a world without violence and with love. Despite the doubts, Azumi remains dedicated to her mission and will not let anything stop her in the battle she has prepared for her entire life.moreless
