Babes in Toyland is a 1961 musical about a young lady who jubilantly enters the world of Toyland after facing stiff opposition in marrying the love of her life. Mary Quite Contrary (Annette Funicello) begins as an anxious bride-to-be as she excitedly prepares to marry the man of her dreams -- Tom Piper (Tom Sands). As the two prepare for a ceremony in Mother Goose Village, the antagonist Barnaby (Ray Bolger) is seen scowling as he wants Mary for himself. In order to stop the wedding, Barnaby hires two henchmen to kill Tom and steal Mary's sheep, which is how she and her household make a living. With no other options, Barnaby thinks Mary will then marry him. Things change however, when Barnaby's hired hands dupe him by actually selling Tom to a gypsy group. Tom escapes and joins his future bride and other characters from Mother Goose in Toyland. They encounter a busy, but festive atmosphere where the Toymaker (Ed Wynn) is preparing to meet his quota demand for Santa Claus and Christmas. As they do their best to help, Mary's crew sings and dances their way through this magical land that stands miles away from the villainous Barnaby.moreless
