Baby Doll is a comedy/drama that focuses on a 19-year-old, clueless virgin named Baby Doll Meighan (Carroll Baker), who still sleeps in a crib, and sucks on her thumb, and her husband, Archie Lee Meighan (Karl Malden), a middle-aged cotton-gin owner. Archie made a promise to Baby Doll's dying father that he would wait until she turns 20 to consummate their marriage. With Baby Doll's 20th birthday a few days away, Archie begins to prepare for the special day. Archie's competitor, Silva Vacarro (Eli Wallach), has a newer, modern cotton gin and has been taking away business from Archie. When Silva's gin burns down, he immediately suspects Archie is behind the fire. In order to get his revenge, Silva devises a plan to take away everything Archie loves. Baby Doll was written by Tennessee Williams and won two awards -- Best Director (Elia Kazan) at the Golden Globe Awards, and Most Promising Newcomer (Eli Wallach) at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards.moreless
