Babymother is film directed by Julian Henriques. The story revolves around Anita (Anjela Lauren Smith), a feisty single mother living in the projects of Harlesden, London and her quest of landing a major record deal. Anita has many obstacles standing in the way of her dreams, including the trials of motherhood, poverty, and an unsupportive and often jealous "babyfather" (Wil Johnson). However, Anita continues to work towards her goal and uses a local reggae dancehall as a platform for showcasing her talents in song and dance. For support, she relies on her two spunky best friends, Sharon (Carolin Chikezie) and Yvette (Jocelyn Jee Esien) and the three of them create an all girl group named Neeta, Sweeta, & Nastie. The movie highlights the power of women and the double standard that often exists between men and women in regards to career success. The ever present reggae beats and the vibrant costumes also bring to life the Jamaican culture found in Harlesden.moreless
