Across the Universe is a love story told through the songs of The Beatles. The 2007 Julie Taymor directed film follows the story of Jude (Jim Sturgess) and his epic journey from the shipyards in Liverpool into the Merchant Navy. Jude jumps ship in New Jersey in search of his American father, whom he has never met. At the same time, Lucy Carrigan (Evan Rachel Wood) is in knots about her boyfriend Daniel (Spencer Liff) having to go off and fight in the Vietnam War. Jude finds his father at Princeton University where he also befriends Lucy's brother Max (Joe Anderson). And when Joe brings Jude home for thanksgiving, he immediately falls in love with Lucy. As the film goes on, Max is deported to Vietnam, Lucy and Jude move in with one another, Jude is deported back to England and Lucy becomes heavily involved with anti-war protesting. The movie concludes with one large rebellious concert on the roof of an apartment building. A concert that brings all the characters back together again under the pretense that ÒAll you need is love.Ó The musical tells a whimsical tale over a vast period of time, set to the backdrop of 34 Beatles songs.moreless
