Bad Day at Black Rock is a dark 1955 thriller starring Spencer Tracy as a stranger trying to solve a mystery in an unfriendly Arizona town. Just after the end of World War II, the one-armed John J. Macreedy (Spencer Tracy) arrives in Black Rock with a dark comment from the conductor that the train has not stopped here in four years. Macreedy finds a hostile attitude from everyone he meets in town. The stationmaster says there are no cabs, the innkeeper tries to deny him a room in a nearly empty hotel and a local cowboy, Hector David (Lee Marvin), hassles him in the lobby. Macreedy meets the local sheriff, Tim Horn (Dean Jagger), in hopes of getting help tracking down a Japanese farmer named Kumoko. The sheriff refuses to help, but another local, Reno Smith (Robert Ryan) insists that Kumoko was sent to an internment camp and never returned. Behind Macreedy's back, Reno asks brutish Coley Trimble (Ernest Borgnine) to get rid of the interloper. As town folks become more threatening, Macreedy tries to solve the mystery of the missing man.moreless
