Ballad of a Soldier is a Russian movie that opens during World War II. It tells the story of a young soldier (Vladimir Ivashov) who, after eliminating two German tanks, is rewarded with six days of leave to visit his mother and help her repair her roof. Through his eyes, the movie shows the trials and tribulations of World War II era Russia. He meets a beautiful teenaged girl, Shura (Zhanna Prokhorenko), and wartime romance inevitably follows. The movie also touches on those he meets - a one-legged veteran (Yevgeni Urbansky) and a female truck driver (Antonina Maksimova) who has lost her son to the war. The movie deals with universal themes that are part of any war everywhere, although the soundtrack is in Russian with English subtitles. It was directed by Grigori Chukhrai and, during a period of detente, became available in the west and received an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay.
