Ballerina is a 2009 documentary that follows the lives of five rising stars in the demanding, glamorous world of Russian ballet. Directed by Bertrand Norman, the film focuses on Alina Somova, a 17-year-old dancer studying at a rigorous academy in St. Petersburg. Somova hopes to set herself apart from the crowd, but with fierce competition, she has to push herself to her limits. Ulyana Lopatkina is a 32-year-old who has already enjoyed a prestigious career with the Kirov Ballet. However, Lopatkina broke her ankle several years ago and has since focused on her family life. Now Lopatkina is not sure the ballet world will accept her back. The documentary also focuses on other Kirov stars, such as Evgenia Obratsova, a young prima ballerina, Diana Vishneva, an established stage presence in Kirov productions and Svetlana Zakharova, a former Kirov dancer who instead decided to move to the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. Each of the five ballerinas have to display amazing physical endurance and face the emotional challenges of rising to the top of the ballet world.moreless
