Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is a 2002 romantic drama directed by Sijie Dai who based it on his autobiographical novel of the same name. The story takes place in 1971 in Maoist China. Two young male university students, Luo (played by Kun Chen) and Ma (played by Ye Liu) get sent to a remote mountain mining village to be reeducated and cleansed of any non communist, western influences and education. There the two are subjected backbreaking work and the utter ignorance of the community. However two things keep them going: music and a beautiful local woman (played by Xun Zhou). The two men decide to woo the girl by stealing the forbidden Western literature of Honore de Balzac and read it to her, teaching her things she could never have imagined herself. This action leads to a journey that deeply changes the girl's perspective on her world, as well as the boys' also.
