Bananas is a farce about a man who tries to impress a girl and inadvertently gets involved in a violent revolution in South America. Fielding Mellish (Woody Allen) is living a rather ordinary life in New York City until he meets Nancy (Louise Lasser), a social activist. Fielding is instantly taken with her, despite the fact that Nancy seems only marginally interested in him. Things change, however, when Fielding appeals to her activist nature and flies to the fictitious South American country of San Marcos to participate in a revolution against its right-wing dictatorship. Unfortunately, Fielding succeeds almost too well and is quickly installed as the president of the new Banana Republic. He returns to his home in New York, only to face indictment for the war crimes committed on his behalf. Despite the fact that he was only trying to impress a girl, Fielding is forced to defend himself against the charges levied against him. Despite being an absurdist comedy, Bananas asks the question, "What would you do for love and have you ever considered that it might be too much?"moreless
