Barabbas is a historical drama about the Jewish rebel Barabbas (Anthony Quinn), who the Romans freed when the people chose him over Jesus. Released by Columbia Pictures in 1961, the movie opens with Pontius Pilate (Arthur Kennedy) offering to free either Jesus or Barabbas. After gaining his freedom, Barabbas tries to reunite with his girlfriend Rachel (Salvana Mangano), who has become a Christian. When Rachel is stoned to death, Barabbas returns to his career as a robber. After the Romans capture Barabbas for the second time, they decide to send him to work in the mines. After 20 years of labor, Barabbas gains a reprieve when an earthquake destroys the mine. After becoming a gladiator, Barabbas gains his freedom for the second time but the Romans arrest him again after he sets a fire.
