Who was Barabbas, the robber who went free by the will of the crowd when Jesus went to the cross? This expensive 1962 film, an international co-production made mostly in Italy, imagines an answer to that question. Anthony Quinn plays Barabbas as a violent, unthinking man, without ideals or foresight, who, after being (as he sees it) miraculously spared from certain death, spends almost three decades contemplating the man who died instead of him, and wondering endlessly about his purpose in the world. Ending in the Rome of the Emperor Nero, the film is less a conventional spectacular than a meditation on the meaning of Christianity.
