The Barefoot Contessa follows a Spanish dancer, Maria Vargas (Ava Gardner), who becomes an international film star after being discovered in a Madrid night club by washed-up film director Harry Dawes (Humphrey Bogart) and financier Kirk Edwards (Warren Stevens). This 1954 film is told in flashbacks at her funeral, and describes her (entirely platonic) friendship with Harry and her rather more volatile relations with Edwards, with South American millionaire Alberto Bravano (Marius Goring) and with Count Vincenzo Torlato-Favrini (Rossano Brazzi), the Italian aristocrat who marries and then murders her.

      • Joseph L. Mankiewicz nearly found himself in  serious legal trouble over the depiction of Kirk Edwards, who was, in the original draft of his screenplay, an even more transparent caricature of Howard Hughes than in the final film.  Mankiewicz was astonished to find that he needed to alter only a handful of minor details to satisfy Hughes's lawyers and to evade a lawsuit.
