Bashing is a 2005 drama about Yuko Takai (Fusako Urabe). In Japan, Yuko was troubled by the horrors happening to Iraqi citizens during the war, so she volunteers and goes to Iraq as an aid worker. While there, she is kidnapped and held hostage by insurgents. When she is finally released, Yuko is happy and relieved to be returning to her home. Back in Japan, she experiences a less than warm welcome from her neighbors, co-workers and even some of her family. Harassing phone calls come from people, who tell her she has brought shame to the country. Yuko works as a maid in a hotel, but loses that job when co-workers continue to cause scenes that the boss will not tolerate. Eventually Yuko's boyfriend leaves her, angry that she helped strangers in another country and not her own people. Bashing is a story of a society's potential intolerance and rigidity, and one woman's attempt to live in that society.
