Batman: Gotham Knight is a straight-to-DVD anthology of short animated films involving Batman between the events of Christopher Nolan's smash hits Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. It is very similar in nature to The Animatrix, which was released between the second and third Matrix movies. The DVD consists of six shorts written by a super team of screenwriters: Josh Olson, David S. Goyer, Brian Azzarello, Greg Rucka, Jordan Goldberg, and Alan Burnett. Directed by Bruce Timm and Toshi Hiruma, the individual segments are co-directed by a group of envelope-pushing anime stars working in 6 different animation studios. Gotham Knight, like Batman Begins, features Batman battling against the Gotham City Mob and Scarecrow. Killer Croc and Deadshot are added to the mix for extra danger. The film is sufficiently violent and gritty. In the UK, it received a 15 certificate. It has the distinction of being the first animated film produced by Warner Brothers to feature Batman.
