Movie Summary

Director:
Tim Burton (I)
Released:
1992
Rating:
PG-13

Batman Returns is a sequel to the 1989 film Batman, both of which were directed by Tim Burton. The film is focused on the events unfolding around Batman (Michael Keaton), and newer additions to Gotham City including Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) and the Penguin (Danny DeVito). The Penguin is not difficult for Batman to understand; abandoned in the sewers as a child, Oswald Cobblepot is warped and deranged beyond repair. He arises from the sewers in the beginning scenes of Batman Returns and blackmails the powerful Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) into having him elected as mayor. However, Catwoman is a completely separate issue. Her alter ego, Selina Kyle, was thrown from a building by Shreck following her discovery of his plans to illegally dispose of pollutants. She is revived by a group of cats, but with the somewhat villainous burden of also living as Catwoman. Batman is then forced to battle the Penguin and Catwoman, while also foiling Shreck's dangerous plan for toxic waste disposal.
