The young men are itching for battle experience and basic training just serves to fuel their hunger. After that they are shipped off to Camp Elliot, leaving their friends, families and girlfriends behind. Upon arriving at Camp Elliot, the new Marines meet their commanding officer, Major Sam Huxley (Van Heflin), who will guide the boys through this stage of the Corps. Then, they ship off to advanced training in New Zealand, leaving more friends behind. Despite the constant movement, goodbyes and heartache, the boys find themselves even hungrier to get into battle.
