Battle for Dien Bien Phu is a short 1986 documentary which chronicles the 55-day fight between the French and the Vietnamese in a battle which preluded the Vietnam War in 1953. The film, which was written and directed by Peter Batty, makes an immense effort to tell the story from both sides - that is a French account and a Vietnamese account. Thirty years after the war took place, Batty was able to collect personal accounts from survivors to use in his storytelling. Many of these interviews are included in the film, giving it an organic texture. Battle for Dien Bien Phu then takes a closer look at the effectives of each army, and explains why the victor won. Is it possible the French weren't wholeheartedly determined to win the siege? Although the battle for Dien Bien Phu is a historical event often occluded by its successor, the Vietnam War, it is still worth learning about. Be sure to catch this film especially if you are a history buff!moreless
