Rating:

Battle for Terra is an animated science fiction film directed by Aristomenis Tsirbas based on a short film of the same name that centers on the world of Terra, a planet in a distant solar system that has been proven inhospitable to humans due to its lack of oxygen but is safe for the native peaceful Terrians. When Earth is destroyed in a civil war amongst its colonies on Venus and Mars, the survivors set out on a spaceship called the Ark in order to land on Terra. Despite the Terrians ban of new technology, Mala (Evan Rachel Wood) develops a telescope in order to see the Ark blocking the sun. As the humans begin to send down scouts to abduct the Terrians, Mala, her friend Senn (Justin Long), and a crashed human pilot, Lieutenant Jim Stanton (Luke Wilson) discover that the Terrians are not as peaceful as Mala and Senn originally thought. The news however sets off a war as Mala, Senn, and Stanton rush to stop the humans from using the Terraformer, which would kill all the Terrians, just as they work to stop the Terrians from reacting to the invasion. Battle for Terra is a look at the reality of invading forces in a world where only one can survive.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times

Director/co-writer Aristomenis Tsirbas, expanding his own short film, unveils a classically devised invasion yarn à la H.G. Wells, but with the twist that humans are the aggressors.

  • 70

    Variety

As original and convincing a feature as the better Japanese animes of recent years --"Tekkonkinkreet" comes to mind, along with the slightly older "Metropolis."

  • 50

The New York Times Neil Genzlinger

The movie's messages are delivered with a heavy hand, but some of the scenes are eye-popping, especially -- sorry, peace-loving Terrians -- the battle sequences.
