Battlestar Galactica is a 1978 science fiction film and the opening act of the Battlestar Galactica franchise. Originally filmed as the pilot of MCA/Universal's television series, the film tells the story of the fall of the Twelve Colonies of the human race. After centuries of warfare against man's sworn enemy, the mechanical race of Cylons, a peace agreement is finally on the table. Believing they have come to the end of the war, mankind is met instead with a surprise Cylon attack, which destroys the colonies and scatters the few humans who survive into space. The last remaining military vessel, a battlestar named Galactica and led by Commnder Adama (Lorne Green), assumes responsibility for the remainder of the human race. Lost in space and pursued by Cylons bent on their extinction, Adama, his children Apollo (Richard Hatch) and Athena (Maren Jensen), playboy fighter-pilot Starbuck (Dirk Benedict) and the crew of the Battlestar Galactica, must lead the fleet of human refugees toward a distant planet from ancient mythology: Earth.
