Beat the Drum is a 2003 South African film directed by David Hickson and starring Clive Scott and Owen Sejake. Young Musa (Junior Singo) is a South African orphan who has grown up in a village that has been ravaged by the AIDS epidemic. Musa decides to leave in search of his uncle in Johannesburg. He takes along a drum given to him by his father, and on his adventure to the city he learns many important life lessons about himself and about living an urban existence. Musa's story is intercut with the stories of a wealthy lawyer learning that he has AIDS and a truck driver whose promiscuity endangers those around him. After spending time in Johannesburg, Musa has a change of heart and decides to return to his village to share his newfound knowledge. Beat the Drum won over 30 international film festival awards and was one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2003.
