Because of Winn Dixie is an emotional movie based on a book written by Kate DiCamillo, who won the Newbery Honor award for her work. The movie was directed by Wayne Wang and was released in 2005. Because of Winn Dixie stars Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dumber, Speed, The Squid and the Whale) and AnnaSophia Robb (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Bridge to Terabithia). India Opal Buloni (AnnaSophia Robb) is a sad and lonely 10 year old girl who has just moved to a small, vacant town in Florida with her father (Jeff Daniels). One day while shopping in a local grocery store, Winn Dixie, India and her father stumble upon an abandoned picardy shepherd. Desperate for a companion, India begs her father to keep the dog, and he agrees. India names the dog Winn Dixie. Over time India and Winn Dixie form a very strong bond which allows India to assuage some underlying issues she has with her father. Because of Winn Dixie is a beautiful story about man and his best friend. Be sure to watch Because of Winn Dixie, but make sure you have some tissues handy!moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 60

    Variety

Uneven though it is, Because of Winn-Dixie, based on Kate Di Camillo's novel, is tough to dislike.

  • 50

    The New York Times

A harmless, pleasant comic drama, but elements that may have seemed delightfully eccentric on the page take on unfortunate new tones when translated to film.

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

Never quite works as a film. The failure to create appropriate cinematic metaphors reduces it to "happiness is a warm puppy" superficiality.
