Bedlam is a black and white film set in 18th century London at the St. Mary's of Bethlehem Asylum. The evil and sadistic Master George Sims (Boris Karloff) runs the asylum, and frequently has people who cross him institutionalized there. The asylum is known for its cruel ways and mistreatment of patients. Nell Bowen (Anna Lee) is a nurse who comes to work there and sees the inhumane conditions to which the patients are subjected. She develops some ideas to change the practices at St. Mary's, but Sims learns of her plot and ends up having to her committed to the asylum. At first Nell tries to block out the insanity that exists all around her, but then she realizes that she can still help. She starts working with the patients, improving their conditions, both physically and mentally. But Master George again tries to stifle the spirited efforts of Nell. Can she turn the asylum into a helpful place and earn her own release or will her nemesis Sims keep her locked away forever?moreless
