Bedtime Stories is a 2008 movie about Skeeter Bronson (Adam Sandler), a repairman who works at a large Los Angeles hotel that is built on the site of a family motel his father once operated. His sister, Wendy (Courteney Cox), needs to travel to Arizona and asks Skeeter to babysit during the evenings for her two children. Skeeter entertains his niece, Bobbi (Laura Ann Kesling), and nephew, Patrick (Jonathan Morgan Heit), by telling them highly imaginative bedtime stories. The first night, he tells a story about knights and the children join in, embellishing the story with their own details. Skeeter finishes his story by having gumballs rain down on a medieval kingdom. The next day, he sees gumballs falling from the sky (result of a truck accident) and assumes the incident is a result of his storytelling. He then tinkers with the stories to influence the next day's events. Skeeter's efforts bring mixed results; many are quite unexpected.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Variety

With Bedtime Stories, Sandler has delivered on his promise to make a movie his kids can enjoy. What's more, he's managed to do so without alienating his core audience.

  • 63

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

This is a harmless and pleasant Disney comedy and one of only three family movies playing over the holidays.

  • 30

The New York Times Jeannette Catsoulis

Soured by its enervated star and uninspired writing, the movie offers only tiny moments of joy, like a hailstorm of gumballs that's unexpectedly magical.
