Movie Summary

Director:
Tim Burton (I)
Released:
1988
Rating:
PG

The film tells the story of Adam and Barbara Maitland, newlyweds who were tragically killed in a car accident. When they arrive at the pearly-gates, however, they are sent back to earth to haunt their old house for 50 years until there is more room in Heaven. When they return to the house, they find that it is now occupied by high-strung couple Charles and Delia Deetz. Frightened at the thought of spending 50 years with the couple, Adam and Barbara enlist the help of Beetlejuice to help scare them away. Beetlejuice is a half-crazed spirit known for his scare tactics, but also known for his unreliability. When he falls in love with Delia and Charles' daughter Lydia, Beetlejuice's antics get out of control.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Variety

Beetlejuice springs to life when the raucous and repulsive Betelgeuse (Keaton) rises from his moribund state to wreak havoc on fellow spooks and mortal enemies.

  • 50

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

Gets off to a start that's so charming it never lives it down. The movie is all anticlimax once we realize it's going to be about gimmicks, not characters.

  • 40

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

Elaborate as this sounds, there really isn't much plot here, only a parade of arbitrary visual tricks to hold the film together. [30 Mar 1988, p.C18]
