Before Stonewall is a 1985 documentary film that focuses on the gay and lesbian community and culture in The United States from the 1920's to The Stonewall Riot in 1969. The Stonewall Riot occurred when the police raided The Stonewall Inn, a bar in New York City that many homosexuals attended. Frustrated and angry, the gay community rioted for three days, starting what is now known as the Gay Rights Movement. The film features a variety of videos and photographs of the gay and lesbian lifestyle prior to 1969. Before Stonewall talks about the abundance of gay soldiers who served in WWII, the title of "sexual perverts" given to gays by Senator McCarthy, the beginning of gay and lesbian organizations in the 1950's and the role of homosexuals in the civil rights movement. The commentary of actual gays and lesbians from the time before The Stonewall Riot is part of what makes this film so genuine.
