Before the Music Dies is a documentary about the evolution in popular music throughout the last several decades. The film describes how consumerism and superficiality have seethed into popular American music and corroded it on a fundamental level. An explanation is provided showing a uniform template from which many of today's successful songs are built. Many of the genres of the past are no longer played on the radio; music has become a corporate instrument with the primary aim of generating revenue. This is a work of established director Andrew Shapner, who takes viewers on a journey through various American cities to acquire input from a myriad of established artists from the early development of contemporary rock, pop, blues and jazz. The film includes private interviews with stars such as Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and Dave Matthews. As they voice their opinions, the consensus becomes clear. Everyone disagrees with the path upon which the music industry is headed.
