Before the Rains is a 2007 Indian-British drama written by Cathy Rabin and directed by Santosh Sivan. Set in British ruled India in the late 1930s, the film tells the forbidden love story of a British Spice Planter, Henry Moores (Linus Roache), and his lovely house servant, Sanjani (Nandita Das). Both married to different partners, the two carry on a torrid love affair, taking reckless chances as they make love under the waterfalls and promise undying love. Caught up in the lies, secrets and innuendo is idealist T. K. Neelan (Rahul Bose) who works for Henry on a national road project. With the growing opposition to British imperialism, T.K. is put in the unenviable position of protecting his boss against his own community. When the love affair is discovered, a tragedy unfolds that shakes the very foundation of the community. T.K. is forced to choose between his boss, his community and his own life.
