Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a mockumentary film that pays homage to the slasher genre. The movie follows a film crew who are documenting an aspiring serial killer who has modeled himself off of the conventions of slasher films. The film crew consists of Taylor Gentry (Angela Goethals), a female journalist, and her two camera men, Doug Halloran (Ben Pace) and Todd (Britain Spellings). The crew film Leslie Vernon's (Nathan Baesel) preparations to murder several teenagers in an abandoned house. Vernon claims to be the spirit of a boy who killed his family and was cast into the river by angry townsfolk, but he soon admits to the crew that he is just an ordinary man by the name of Leslie Mancuso. The film also features actor Robert Englund as the character of Doc Halloran. Englund is famous for playing the serial killer Freddy Krueger in the series, Nightmare on Elm Street.
