Behind the Mask features a famous superhero fighting crime and protecting the innocent. Detective Lamont Cranston (Kane Richmond) moonlights as the Shadow, a masked crime-fighter based on the popular comic book character of the 1930s. Everyone loves the Shadow, which is what makes it all the more unsettling when he is accused of murdering corrupt newspaper columnist, Jeff Mann (James Cardwell). Cranston's impending marriage to the lovely Margo Lane (Barbara Read) is put on hold while he tries to clear his name. Lane is especially displeased with this development as their marriage was going to mark the end of Cranston's role as the Shadow, so she begins her own investigation. It seems like everyone in the city is out to get the Shadow. Even Police Inspector Cardona (Joseph Crehan) and Mann's editor Brad Thomas (Robert Shayne) join the witch hunt. Can Cranston prove his innocence and still win the girl? Watch director Phil Karlson's 1946 thriller to find out.
