Behind the Sun tells the story of an epic feud between the Breves the Ferreira families. Set in the Brazilian badlands of the early 1900s, the two families both earn their living farming sugar cane. A long-standing feud over land has turned violent, causing much bloodshed. When Inacio Breves (Caio Junquiera) is murdered by the Ferreiras, his grieving father orders his older son, Tonho (Rodridgo Santoro), to kill one of the Ferreira sons in retaliation. Tonho questions the wisdom of their bloody rivalry and ponders his fate as he spends time with his youngest brother Pacu (Ravi Ramos Lacerda). The two brothers discover a small circus traveling through town and meet Clara (Flavia Marco Antonio), a beautiful circus performer who catches the eye of Tonho. Tonho begins to fall in love with Clara, bringing him into conflict with his supposed destiny.
