Behold a Pale Horse is a 1964 war drama starring Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn. 20 years after the Spanish Civil War, Republican war veteran Manuel Artiguez (Gregory Peck) lives in exile in France, where he continues to wage guerilla attacks against the Spanish government. He wants to return to his hometown of San Martin when he hears his mother, Pilar (Mildred Dunnock), is dying. But Captain Vinolas (Anthony Quinn) has been waiting for the opportunity to entrap him. Although a kind preiest, Father Francisco (Omar Sharif) tries to warn Artiguez that he will face sure death because of the vindictive Vinolas, Artiguez is determined to see his mother one last time and embarks on the dangerous journey. He gets as far as San Martin. Though Pilar has already passed away, a traitor named Carlos (Raymond Pellegrin) convinces Artiguez there is still time, and then promptly informs Vinolas of his location. Directed by Fred Zinnemann, this adventure thriller captures the complicated politics of the Spanish Civil War.moreless
