Being Julia is a 2004 comedic drama about a diva actress living in London just prior to the outbreak of World War II. Despite being one of the most popular actresses in England, Julia Lambert (Annette Bening) is beginning to worry about her career as middle age looms. She wants to quit acting and travel abroad, but her husband, Michael (Jeremy Irons) convinces her to remain with the play for one more summer. He introduces Julia to an American named Tom Fennel (Shaun Evans) and the two have an immediate connection. They quickly fall into a clandestine relationship, rejuvenating Julia and making her happy for the first time in years. Her happiness is short-lived, however, after Tom meets a young actress named Avice Crichton (Lucy Punch) and begins having an affair with her. Though Julia pretends that she is happy that Tom has apparently found true love, the truth is that she has laid out an eloborate revenge plan that will shortly ensnare the young lovers.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

The filmmakers have brought such breadth and depth to the material. Everyone counts in this film, not just Julia Lambert.

  • 60

The New York Times Dana Stevens

Being Julia may not make much psychological or dramatic sense, but Ms. Bening, pretending to be Julia (who is always pretending to be herself), is sensational.

  • 60

    Variety Todd McCarthy

A minor affair, a confection based on dalliances and the way a set of sophisticated theater people handle them, that lacks true distinction.
