Beloved is a 1998 drama film directed by Jonathan Demme. It is based on the 1987 Toni Morrison novel of the same name. The film is set in Ohio, shortly after the Civil War. Sethe (Oprah Winfrey) is a former slave who ends up on the outskirts of Cincinnati, trying to raise her children. An angry poltergeist has been making their lives miserable, which eventually causes her two boys to run away. Years later, Sethe is living alone with her daughter Denver (Kimberly Elise). Paul D (Danny Glover), who Sethe knew from the plantation she and her children escaped from, ends up finding her. He encounters the poltergeist and impresses Sethe with his actions, which leads her to let him move into their house. Then one day, a mysterious young woman shows up in their yard, calling herself Beloved (Thandie Newton). Her appearance leads to events that will change their small family forever.
