Movie Summary

Bend It Like Beckham is a dramatic comedy film directed by Gurinder Chadha that centers on a young Punjabi girl living in London as she tries to break free from her traditional Punjabi Sikh parents' expectations and her own desires to play football (soccer). All eighteen-year-old Jesminder ÒJessÓ Bhamra (Parminder Nagra) wanted to do was to play football, a game her parents (Anupam Kher and Shaheen Khan) refuse to let her do, but instead works at Heathrow in preparation for college. When Jules Paxton (Keira Knightley) catches sight of Jess playing in the park with her friend Tony (Ameet Chana), she offers Jess the chance to play for a proper team coached by Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), something she'd have to hide from her parents. Thankfully her parents are too distracted by the upcoming wedding of their older daughter Pinky (Archie Panjabi), but it comes to a crashing halt as they catch on to her new ÒhobbyÓ and forbid her from playing. Jess struggles with the demands of her parents while coping with the chance to play at Santa Clara University in California on scholarship and having a life led by her own rules.moreless
