Beneath the Planet of the Apes is a 1970 science fiction film and the second installment of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Like in the first film, a spaceship from the United States has crash landed on the planet. This time the crew is searching for Taylor (Charlton Heston) and the rest of his space crew. Taylor, however, has been seemingly swallowed up by the planet itself. Brent (James Franciscus) emerges from his space ship confused at the ape ruled planet. After learning that apes are in charge of the planet and not very friendly towards humans, Brent and Nova (Linda Harrison) escape from ape city and ind the ruins of New York City. Brent puts 2 and 2 together and realizes that this is Earth. Brent and Nova are captured and brought to St. Patrick's Cathedral by telepathic mutated humans. There they worship an atomic bomb. Brent warns the humans of an imminent ape attack on the underground civilization and finds they have kidnapped Taylor as well. The apes invade and there is a deadly battle with an explosive conclusion.

Metacritic Score

  • 63

    Rolling Stone

The craziest installment of the Apes series starts out as an almost point-for-point remake of the 1968 original, somehow making it even darker and stranger.

  • 60

    Empire Ian Nathan

Those with the patience to sit through a slow first half will be rewarded with another gutsy ending.

  • 50

    IGN

A workmanlike sequel, it lacks the wit and intelligence of its predecessor.
