Beresina oder Die letzten Tage der Schweiz, released in December of 1999, is a unique Swiss comedy. Translated, the title means 'The Last Days of Switzerland', and is based on the story of a Russian call girl, Irina (Yelena Panova) who arrives in Switzerland with the goal of eventually becoming a Swiss citizen. Thanks to a lawyer friend, she is set up with some influential clients. As a naive person, she ends up being used and abused by everyone but it takes her some time to realize that. Just as she's about to gain her desired passport, her 'sponsors' decide she's outlived her usefulness and send her back home. This provides her with the ability to 'blow the whistle' on some of her influential clients (politicians, military top brass, businessmen and the media) which sends a shock wave through the nation's social and political foundations. A fun, comic performance that's sure to delight.
