Besieged, a critically and popularly acclaimed drama co-adapted by Bernardo Bertolucci and Clare Peploe from a James Lasdun story, debuted in 1998 at the Toronto and San Sebastian Film Festivals. Jason Kinsky (David Thewlis) and Shandurai (Thandie Newton) are a quirky British musician and his maid, respectively. Shandurai fled to Italy from Africa after her husband's imprisonment there, and now lives in the basement of David's expansive, inherited Roman mansion while she performs cleaning duties for him and studies medicine. David falls in love with Shandurai, and tries to woo her with flowers, music and other gifts. She rebukes him, but he persists. He continues to shower her with adulations and, in a fit of frustration, she finally shouts at him to get her husband back for her. This triggers the unfolding of a whimsical and fragile love story, as David gathers resources and the nerve to fulfill his love's unusual request.moreless
