Set shortly before the outbreak of World War I, the film tells the story of Baroness Edith de Kekesfalva (Lilli Palmer) who has given up on life after being paralyzed in a riding accident. When Edith meets Lieutenant Anton Marek (Albert Lieven), her outlook on life immediately begins to improve. Edith's father, Baron Emil de Kekesfalva (Ernest Thesiger), noticing the improvement, asks Marek to spend time with her. Marek agrees out of pity. Slowly, Edith begins to fall in love with him but the feeling is less than mutual. When Edith reveals her love, a guilt-ridden Marek agrees to marry her after she is cured. When news of their engagment reaches Marek's fellow soldiers, however, the truth comes out. As the country plunges into war, Marek must deal with the consequences of his deception.
