Beyond the Horizon is Eugene O'Neill's tragic drama of two brothers who let the love for a woman come between them, leading them to ultimate grief and bitter despair. Andrew Mayo (Edward J. Moore) is a consummate farmer, content with working the land. His brother Robert (Richard Backus) is a bookish, introspective dreamer. Both men are in love with their neighbor, Ruth Atkins (Maria Tucci), and compete for her affections. As Robert is about to board a ship for an ocean voyage, Ruth reveals that she has chosen him as her beau. Shortly into their marriage, though, the capricious Ruth confesses to Robert that their marriage is a mistake; that Andrew is the man she truly loves. As the story unfolds, the brothers grimly realize that perhaps the only real love among them all is that between the two brothers. This was the first of four plays for which O'Neill won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
