Beyond the Rocks is a silent film based on the novel by Elinor Glyn. The film revolves around a woman (Gloria Swanson) who is forced into an arranged marriage with a wealthy, older man. In the days before her wedding, she meets a man (Rudolph Valentino) her own age and they develop an interest in each other. Soon after, the woman and her husband are on their honeymoon in the Alps when she meets the younger man once again and they spend time together unbeknownst to the woman's husband. The two meet once again in Paris, France, where they acknowledge their feelings for each other, but are unable to act on the relationship until later in the film. Beyond the Rocks was directed by Sam Wood and released on May 7, 1922. The film was considered lost for most of the 20th century until its rediscovery in a Dutch man's collection in 2003. The first modern screening of the film was in 2005 following an extensive restoration process.moreless
